Imagine swimming through water that glows around every movement of your hands. Blue, ghostly light trails behind you like something out of a fairy tale. This is bioluminescence — and Bonaire is one of the best places in the Caribbean to experience it.
What Is Bioluminescence?
Bioluminescence is produced by tiny marine organisms called dinoflagellates. When disturbed by movement, they emit a short burst of blue-green light. The effect is absolutely stunning — especially when you’re floating in warm Caribbean water under a dark, star-filled sky.
When Is the Best Time to See It?
The bioluminescence is most visible on dark nights — ideally during the new moon phase when there’s minimal moonlight. Captain Jack Bonaire schedules the Bioluminescence Tour specifically around these nights to give guests the most vivid experience possible.
What Happens on the Tour?
We depart after sunset from Harbour Village Marina. As we head out to sea, the crew dims the boat lights and gives guests time to let their eyes adjust to the darkness. Once anchored at the right spot, you slip into the warm water and watch in amazement as every movement you make lights up the ocean around you.
It’s an experience that’s nearly impossible to photograph — you simply have to be there. Many guests describe it as the single most magical moment of their entire trip to Bonaire.
Who Is This Tour For?
This tour is suitable for swimmers of decent level. You don’t need to be a diver just comfortable swimming in dark, warm water. It’s a popular choice for couples, families with older children 13 and up, and solo travelers looking for something truly unique.
